Emu is an associated professor at the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology (TUAT) and is specialising in the human dimensions of wildlife research. She is interested in how diverse worldviews shaped by local knowledge, culture, and history, impact people’s perception of wildlife and nature. She received training in environmental sciences (major: environmental toxicology) at TUAT. Her PhD research at the Humboldt University of Berlin and the Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research explored the potential of citizen science to facilitate sustainable coexistence with returning wildlife species (bison, moose and wolf) in Germany. As a postdoctoral researcher she coordinated the EU BiodiverSA+ funded project TransWILD, which examined human-wildlife interactions in and around protected areas in Bulgaria, Germany, Italy, Norway, and Spain. She also conducted research at the University of Oxford’s Wildlife Conservation Research Unit (WildCRU) on public perceptions of large carnivores (wolf, lynx and bear) and their management in Germany.
